Selwyn College in Cambridge is unique amongst all of the Oxbridge colleges in that it hosts an annual winter Ball, for the sixth year running Undefined Group were approached to provide our expertise and knowledge to make Selwyn Snowball 2018 another huge success. We provided full Technical Event Production Services for the event across the 7 main areas which span a large part of the colleges facilities including Lighting, Sound, Rigging & Power Equipment & Services. The theme at this year’s event was “Into the Woods” daring guests to explore the depths of the forest and see what they might discover.
The Forest Stage situated in what is normally the college dining hall, played host to some big names from the DJ World, “The Reflex” and “Daddy Russell”. Over the years we have developed a stage which fits perfectly within the space whilst maximising the opportunities we have for rigging the necessary lighting and sound equipment. We provided Staging and a Prolyte H30V Truss Ground Support for the Lighting and Drapes to be hung from. The Lighting Rig comprised of Robe Mega Pointes, Martin Atomic 3000 Strobes, Showtec Sunstrip Active Battens and Prolights StudioCOBFC Fixtures controlled from an Avolites Quartz with Mobile Fader Wing. Sound consisted of RCF HDL6A Line Array Speakers and RCF 8004A Subs controlled from a Digico SD9 Digital Mixer.
The Canopy Stage located in the New SCR played host to a wide range of acts this year from the ever popular Colonel Spanky’s Love Ensemble to the Fitz Barber Shop Quartet so a flexible stage design was required. A simple starcloth backdrop complemented with Cargo Netting to give the forest feel helped transform the room. Lighting was kept simple with Martin Rush 5×5 Matrix Strobe Panels as well as some Robe Mega Pointes controlled from an Avolites Quartz.
Old Court has always been the most challenging area of the Ball for the committee to develop given the vast expanse of open space. It is always daunting for the students to come up with ideas that will fill the area but also provide something that guests want to have their picture taken against. Once again we came up with a stunning feature for the centre of Old Court Lawn which fitted their theme perfectly. We built a Prolyte MPT Structure from Prolyte H30V Truss in the shape of a Tree which the committee then decorated with hundreds of metres of pea light. The huge 7m structure provided a magical backdrop to the Ball and was enjoyed by guests throughout the evening. In addition we lit the perimeter of Old Court with over 30 ETC Source Fours with a variety of different forest gobos.
Selwyn Snowball 2018 once again set the bar very high for the next years committee to pull off an event that was not only “a sugary success” according to Varsity but was also another enjoyable event from start to finish for Undefined Group to develop.
