For the fourth year running the Selwyn Snowball Committee approached us to provide full Technical Production Services for the annual Snowball at Selwyn College, Cambridge. The theme for this year’s event was “Aurora – A Phenomenal Journey” focussing on the natural wonders of the universe. The chosen theme proved to be a challenging one to pull off however we thrive on the challenges our clients bring to us and supplied the best production the Snowball had ever seen.
Throughout the event we provided Lighting, Sound, Staging, Rigging & Power services to the 6 venues, the most technically complex of which being the college Hall. Here we provided Staging and a Prolyte H30V Truss Ground Support for the Lighting and Drapes to be hung from. Headliners this year were Delamere and Tinchy Stryder so the need for a versatile and eye-catching rig were key to the design of the stage. The Lighting Rig comprised of Martin Mac Quantum Profiles, Martin Atomic 3000 Strobes, Lanta Aurora Bar LED Battens and Martin Rush 5x5 Matrix Strobe Panels controlled from an Avolites Quartz with Mobile Fader Wing. Sound consisted of RCF HDL10A Line Array Speakers and RCF 8004A Subs controlled from a Digico SD9 Digital Mixer.
The New SCR stage played host to a wide range of acts this year from the extravagant Colonel Spanky’s Love Ensemble to the witty Cambridge Impronauts so a flexible stage design was required. A simple black backdrop complemented with custom Wooden panelling to give the effect of a forest provided an elegant setting for the room. Lighting was kept simple with Showtec Sunstrips and Lanta Aurora Bar LED Battens as well as some Martin Mac Quantums controlled from an Avolites Quartz. UV Lighting was also used within the room to highlight the luminescence of the drinks being served.
In Old Court the committee wanted to achieve something different from previous years, and were looking for something that would reflect their theme. We used mirror-balls across the lawn to reflect light across the entire courtyard, we chose to use Clay Paky Sharpys, for their intense narrow beam, to light them. The end result was a stunning glittering effect and provided a great photo opportunity for guests at the ball and proved to be a very popular feature.
