Excelsior Academy Awards

Excelsior Academy, Newcastle

Excelsior Academy Awards Evening is held annually to celebrate the achievements of their students in the previous academic year. Undefined Group has worked with Excelsior for a number of years on this event but in 2017 they decided to move the event. Originally hosted at Life Centre Newcastle, they moved the event to their Sports Hall in order to increase the capacity. Not only did they change the format of the event but also required a bigger production solution from us.

Design Process

Initially 3D CAD Models of the Sports Hall were drawn up with the location of the stage and seating to get the best layout. From here we came up with the design concept for the event. Simple staging and set was used for the event consisting of a simple black backdrop. Covering a 24m width at a height of 7m this gave a blank canvas to built the event from. In front of this hung a 12m x 4m Widescreen Projection Surface. Truss columns of varying heights were placed on the floor which were lit from inside. In addition to this we built a large stage and two smaller stages either side for the musical entertainment at the event.

Rigging, Lighting & Sound

The backdrop was built from a Prolyte MPT Tower system consisting of four towers to create the 24m span. From this we hung Black Wool Serge Drapes as well as the projection surface, lighting and PA Hangs. Sound reinforcement consisted of two hangs of RCF HDL6a Line Array Speakers as well as other RCF speakers around the room to cover all areas. Lighting was very simple and consisted of coloured lighting for the stage as well as the truss columns and key lighting for the three different stages and lecterns on the main stage area.

AV

Audio Visual Services at the event were key to the success and we chose to used a large 12m x 4m screen to create a key focal point. This gave the best opportunity to display winners at the event as well as provide live playback of the event. One Panasonic DZ-13K Projector with a relatively short throw lens was used which was controlled from a Blackmagic ATEM Switcher. Fed into this was a number of playback computers as well as one manually operated camera to ensure everyone could see everything going on up on the screen.

The event was a huge success and staff and students enjoyed celebrating their achievements.  Undefined Group were delighted to be able to share in the celebration of success at Excelsior Academy once again.
